Something For The Weekend…Halloween Twist

Friday, October 31st, 2008

Other than a ‘fancy dress’ club night (costume choices for girls: sexy angel, sexy devil, sexy stapler…you get the idea) student-friendly activities for Halloween are few and far between.

But just because you’re no longer 14 (making it socially unacceptable for you to go trick-or treating) it doesn’t mean that there aren’t loads of ways you can enjoy it.

Here’s some of the best Halloween-related things that you can do this weekend - and there isn’t a fun-sized Mars bar in sight.

Watch…a selection of the funniest and most terrifying short films online

Whether it’s the story of the misfortune cookie or the cutest zombies this side of Cartoon Network, you can be scared, amused and disgusted in equal measure.

Amateurish, I hear you say? Well any horror connoisseurs out there may prefer the Top 50 Scariest Movie Moments.

And while we’re on the subject of scary movies…

Vote…for your favourite scary movie at hmv.com

Cast your vote for the best horror film of all time for the chance to win a £100 hmv giftcard.

Whether it’s the classic Psycho, the gory Saw or the tense Jaws, they want to hear what film makes you sleep with the light on.

Drink…’bobbing for apples’

For a Halloween cocktail the recipe isn’t particularly shocking - the alcohol is optional (!) - and the ingredients aren’t exactly student store cupboard essentials.

But it’s got to be a hell of a lot tastier than pumpkin juice, so why not give it a go?

Visit…the scariest UK attractions

Read the Beanzine article Who you gonna call…Halloween in the UK! to find the spookiest attractions taking place nationwide (plus one in Las Vegas).

Happy Halloween!

Government admits £200m student funding gap

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

With the furore over ‘Sachsgate’ plastered all over the news you may not have noticed the little slip that the Government made over next year’s student grants.

Because of a miscalculation, the threshold for receiving a non-repayable grant has tumbled from £60,000 to £50,020.

While most applicants won’t be affected, those who’s parents earn just over the £50,000 mark will lose out on around £500 per year.

Not to rub salt in the wound but that’s a laptop, a week’s holiday or one cinema trip per week for a year - with popcorn.

So if you know anyone in this unfortunate position here are a few things you can do to ease the pain:

1. Join studentbeans.com

Obviously the best place to head in a financial crisis of this magnitude is to the leading student offers website in the UK.

There they can make use of Student Money Saving Tips2 for 1 cinema offers and other deals posted several times daily on the Beanboard.

2. The art of the budget

Having been a student for some time now (I’m assuming that, reading the studentbeans.com blog, you’re a student) you’ll be able to pass on to your impoverished friend the art of budgeting.

If however, you’ve been winging it since Fresher’s Week then this article on student budgeting will sort them out.

3. Have a practical Christmas and a thrifty New Year

Forget bath salts or drinking games - help your friend by giving them something useful, whether they ask for it or not.

Supermarket gift vouchers and a student cookbook may not go down well at first, but several months down the line when they’re scraping together the pennies for a tin of tuna, they’ll be thankful for your resourcefulness.

Students: Vote in the Beanies!

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

Voting for the Beanzine Entertainment Awards 2008 is now open!

Are you dying to let the world know of your love for Kings of Leon or desperate to proclaim your addiction to Mario Kart Wii?

Here’s an opportunity to get your opinion heard on some of the most pressing issues for today’s student.

I’m not talking about the impending US Election or the £100m cut in next year’s student grants, but who will emerge victorious in the Beanzine Entertainment Awards 2008.

Brainchild of Entertainment Editor Rob Leedham, they give every student nationwide the chance to cast their vote in the following categories:

  • Song of the year
  • Movie of the year
  • Book of the year
  • TV show of the year
  • Video game of the year
  • Event of the year
  • Entertainer/s of the year

You can find the nominees for each category and cast your vote in the poll on the studentbeans.com homepage.

The winners will be announced in the Beanzine and on the studentbeans.com blog in December…watch this space!

Students - Get rewarded for shopping online!

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

Shopping online is typically so much easier than battling the High Street - no queues, no tantrum-throwing toddlers and it can all be done whilst writing up your lecture notes (read: watching Jeremy Kyle).

But now shopping online has just become that much smarter. Thanks to beansback.com, our new cashback site, you can shop at over a thousand online retailers - and get paid for it.

Register for free and the next time you shop online simply visit the retailer through beansback.com. The amount you spend will be tracked and a percentage added to your account.

Once you’ve earned enough you can expect a nice cheque to arrive shortly through the post. And with Christmas just around the corner it makes even more sense to buy online and get rewarded for shopping as usual!
